Red Pill Blues is the sixth studio album by Maroon 5. It was released on November 3, 2017, by 222 and Interscope Records. The title of the album refers to the science fiction term of taking the red pill or the blue pill, which originated from the 1999 sci-fi film The Matrix. The album is the follow-up to their fifth studio album V (2014) and features guest appearances from ASAP Rocky, SZA, LunchMoney Lewis and Julia Michaels.
‘People gonna go crazy,’ rapper says of unexpected ‘Jesus Piece’ collaboration.
Game estimates he’s been pulling all-nighters at a Los Angeles studio for the better part of the last month as he pieces together his forthcoming concept album, Jesus Piece. It’s a matter of hitting a deadline: the West Coast rapper is set to release the album in December, and after scrapping his previous project, F.I.V.E. – he ditched the fifth-album concept after Trey Songz released his own Chapter Five (“I didn’t want to touch that anymore,” Game explains) – the rapper must record the album quickly. “In a little bit short of a month I’ve been able to bring a whole new album to the surface,” he tells Rolling Stone. “We just went hard, man. I’m blessed. It’s crazy.”
Over the past few weeks, the rapper has slowly revealed a slew of big-name artists set to be featured on the follow-up to 2011’s The R.E.D. Album, a list that includes Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Meek Mill and Pusha T. Now the rapper reveals that Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine will also appear on the LP.
“When everybody hears the Adam Levine record, I think they gonna go crazy,”
he predicts. Game is hesitant however, to offer up any additional details regarding his unexpected collaboration with the Voice judge.
“I want that to hit people in the face,” he says of the still-under-wraps song. “It’s a real dope record.”
The rapper adds that it was important he have the majority of the artists featured on the album join him for in-studio sessions, as opposed to operating by remote. “About 75 percent of the features were in-studio,” he explains. He recalls “a lot of late nights with Jagermeister and ice and Red Bull,” and says, “That’s the type of artist I’ve always been. I definitely prefer to be in-studio versus sending emails. You just don’t get the vibe.”
The deal reunites Lucca with Levine, the Maroon 5 front man who worked as the singer’s mentor through the spring on the NBC singing competition. Known for his covers of Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” and the Britney Spears’ hit ” … Baby One More Time,” Lucca took third place in the competition.
Levine and Lucca collaborated on the Beatles’ “Yesterday” which, Lucca tells Billboard, “was the impetus to do the whole thing. We had a good time working with each other. Ironically, it was an organic relationship (after the show). He didn’t put too much stock in me not winning.”
Lucca, who has released four full-length albums of his own material, joins 222 Records’ roster, which includes Matthew Morrison, Diego Boneta and Rozzi Crane. His last release, “Under the Influence,” was a collection of covers that came out in September 2011.
Lucca began a cross-country tour just after Labor Day that will take him to more than three dozen cities where his shows are now a 50/50 split between covers and originals. “After the show ended we did a celebratory victory lap to say thank you to the fans,” Lucca said from Orlando, Fla. “I had mapped out the fall tour (during the show’s run. It’s now the ‘Chapter Two tour’.”
Between the victory lap and current tours, Lucca was able to work in songwriting trips to Los Angeles and Nashville to work with potential co-writers. “We have a solid arsenal — a good dozen or so songs,” he says
