The show will feature unsuspecting superfans who receive the biggest surprise of their lives when the stars they love “accidentally” show up at milestone events.
The network behind Levine’s juggernaut, The Voice, has greenlit a pilot for a new, not-yet-titled unscripted series from the musician. The show — which was inspired by the hugely popular ‘Sugar’ video from his longtime band, Maroon 5 — will feature unsuspecting superfans who receive the biggest surprise of their lives when the stars they love “accidentally” show up at milestone events.
The surprise could take many shapes: a couple about to get married suddenly discovers that a world famous recording artist is leading the house band, or an Emmy Award-winning actor becomes an unexpected guest of a bachelorette party.
Levine, who’s appeared on every Voice cycle to date, has teamed with director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), who directed Maroon 5’s viral music video, and Renegade 83 (Naked and Afraid) on the hourlong entry. They’ll be working with a team of improv experts to craft the surprises as well.
Under Levine’s 222 Productions, he and longtime manager/producing partner Jordan Feldstein will executive produce along with Dobkin, Josh Gummersall (222), David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe (Renegade 83).
The news comes two-plus years after NBC announced it had inked a development deal with the Maroon 5 frontman. In recent years, Levine has shrewdly capitalized on The Voice’s success, having diversified his resume with acting credits (Begin Again, American Horror Story), endorsement deals and fashion and fragrance lines.
Levine, 222 and Renegade 83 are all repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman; Dobkin is repped by WME.
